Convicted paedophile and former pop star Gary Glitter ( pictured above ) is still free to travel abroad despite being put on the UK sex offenders’ register for life. The shamed singer arrived back in Britain early yesterday morning, grinning inanely as he was escorted off the plane and through Heathrow Airport. Despite police protection, he refused to leave Terminal 3 out of fears for his safety and stayed away from a court hearing where his solicitor unveiled a bid to clear his name, claiming his human rights had been violated. The lawyer described the former glam rock star’s conviction for abusing two young girls in Vietnam as a ‘travesty of justice’ brought about by an ‘unfair trial’. Now I don’t for one second think Glitter’s defence stands up but it’s a sad testament to New Labour’s political correctness that if convicted Islamic terrorist Abu Hamza was to put up such a pathetic plea it would be taken seriously. Not really surprising though – after all, there’s a damn sight more Muslim voters in marginal inner-city parliamentary constituencies than there are paedophiles .

And in the UK three men arrested yesterday under terrorism legislation are being questioned over internet threats to kill Tony Blair and Gordon Brown ( pictured above ). Surprisingly, these suspects are not members of Gordon Brown’s cabinet aspiring to be Prime Minister ! One of the men being questioned by police in Manchester is suspected of posting a death threat on a recognised jihadi website and styling himself Sheikh Umar Rabie al-Khalaila, leader of al-Qaeda in Britain. The threats appeared on the al-Ekhlaas website – which has been used by al-Qaeda and is monitored by intelligence agencies – in January. They gave warning of a wave of suicide attacks in Britain and against British interests around the world unless the group’s demands for a withdrawal from Iraq and the release of Muslim prisoners were met. The detainees are aged 21, 22 and 23 and all come from Blackburn, Lancashire. Now for our American readers, that’s the same place that John Lennon sang about, saying 4000 holes were . It seems if these allegations are true that 3 of these holes have been occupied by vacuous idiots spouting rubbish.

Of course Gordon’s popularity isn’t just low amongst alleged Islamic terrorists. Most of the country thinks he’s a waste of space. So when he says that Britain’s medal-winning athletes should be rewarded with a raft of honours by the Queen as a token of the nation’s admiration, with a triumphal return parade through London next week, top performers such as Chris Hoy, who pedalled his way to a remarkable three cycling golds and Rebecca Adlington ( pictured above ), who won two golds, may think they’re receiving Downing Street acclaim and patronage. What of course is really happening is a pathetic attempt by Gordon to try and steal some of the Olympic attention, hoping that some of the glory will rub off on him . No chance.

Russian troops ( pictured above ) finally began withdrawing from Georgia yesterday – but insisted some will remain in the country for the foreseeable future. Senior Russian General Anatoly Nogovitsyn said the army will remain in control of major roads inside Georgia, denying Tbilisi control over the country’s main east-west connections. Nogovitsyn unveiled a map showing what he said would be Russian ‘zones of responsibility’ for Russian ‘peacekeepers’. What a coincidence, because it’s almost exactly 40 years ago that the Russians established a “zone of responsibility” in Prague.

That beacon of Western-sponsored democracy, Pakistan, is electing a new President. The party of the assassinated former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto has nominated her widower to the job. The leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party ( PPP ), the main party in the country’s coalition government, was unanimous in backing Asif Ali Zardari ( above right ) to replace Pervez Musharraf, a party spokeswoman said today. The move comes after the country’s election commission announced that Pakistani politicians will elect a new president early next month. Members of the federal and provincial assemblies must select a successor to Musharraf, who resigned on Monday to avoid impeachment charges. Why doesn’t someone in Pakistan realise that unless and until you break the family and/or hereditary chain of tribal succession to the top political jobs then democracy will remain a pipe dream ?

Britain’s best-known pest control business, Rentokil Initial ( vehicle above ), saw its profits plunge by more than 50% over the first half of the year, casting a shadow over the group’s recovery hopes following four profit warnings since December. The group said that improvements in the business are being slowed by more difficult economic conditions and warned that the current rate of losses would continue for the remainder of the year. An official spokesman said that with regard to the reaction of shareholders to the news, he expected many rats to be leaving the sinking ship over the next few weeks.
