BROWN THINKS BLAIR IS “EXCELLENT” – PROOF HE IS CRAZY

Tony Blair is “an excellent candidate” to become Europe’s first President, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown said yesterday, ahead of an EU summit that is likely to be the first to consider the issue. Speaking at a press conference in Brussels, Mr Brown stressed that his predecessor (pair pictured above) had yet to formally declare himself a candidate, and the terms of the President’s role had still to be defined by EU leaders. But he said: “We, the British government, believe that Tony Blair would be an excellent candidate and an excellent person to hold the job of President of the European council.” Yet another example, if one was needed, of how lamentably out of touch Gormless Gord really is with British opinion – not to mention how crazy he must be. On the other hand, I suppose it might turn out OK – after all, a commendation from Gordon must be regarded as similar to a kiss of death to the recent cynical, opportunist convert to Roman Catholicism. And judging by the increasing coolness across the EU towards Blair, most of Europe thinks so too.

More bullshit from the “Green Shoots” brigade. It was reported yesterday that the American economy, the world’s largest, unofficially emerged from recession in the third quarter of the year, growing at a better-than-expected “annualised pace of 3.6%.” So no doubt all the spivs in the New York Stock Exchange (pictured above) and the City of London will be awarding themselves fat bonuses while unemployment, repossessions and company liquidations continue to rise. But what’s all this nonsense about an “annualised pace of 3.6%” ? In reality, the US economy grew by 0.9% over 3 months, staring from a low base. Yet all of a sudden, by transposing that rate for a further 9 months ahead, we’re told growth is at 3.6%. What a load of nonsensical sophistry, spread by greedy people who can’t wait to get their noses back in the trough – or rather, keep their noses in the trough even more than they do already - at the expense of the rest of us.

Former cabinet minister Tony McNulty (pictured above) yesterday admitted he should have had “much more concern” for how his expense claims were viewed by the public, rather than “simply following the rules”, as he was forced to apologise to MPs over his second home allowance. The House of Commons Standards and Privileges Committee ruled he had to repay £13,837 in second-home expenses he claimed on a house where his parents lived, and issue an apology. The former employment minister told MPs in a brief personal statement to Parliament that he “accepted in full” the conclusions of the committee, which found that he breached Commons rules by making a claim for expenses that were “not wholly and exclusively incurred in connection with his parliamentary duties” . Nice work if you can get it – fiddle, then a mumbled, perfunctory apology and everything’s OK. Will we see the Fraud Squad called in to sort this lot out ? Don’t hold your breath.

Sometimes you wonder what kind of lunatic asylum Britain is becoming. The German Luftwaffe (a World War 2 Me-109 pictured above) has been invited to join the 70th anniversary celebrations of the Battle of Britain next year. It is the first time the German air force has been asked to take part in the RAF’s annual International Air Tattoo, which is staged at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire each July. Organisers visited the German embassy earlier this month to formally extend its invitation to the 2010 event. The Italian air force, which flew alongside the Luftwaffe, has also been invited to attend. Air Tattoo director Tim Prince said it is important to recognise bravery and honour the fallen on both sides of the conflict. What politically correct pan-European nonsense – and what an insult not only to our history but also to the brave RAF pilots who died in 1940. At this rate, before long the IRA and Al Qaeda will be trooping the colour.

English Premiership footballer Marlon King (pictured above) is facing jail after being found guilty yesterday of groping a young woman in a nightclub and then breaking her nose when she spurned his “disgusting” advances. The Wigan Athletic striker, who was celebrating both his wife’s pregnancy and scoring a winning goal hours earlier, was repeatedly “cold-shouldered” by women revellers in London’s packed Soho Revue Bar last December. When a slightly-built university student became the latest to recoil from his touch, he lost his temper and in an outburst of “completely gratuitous violence” lashed out, “smashing” her to the floor. King was unanimously convicted of sexually assaulting the 20-year-old and causing actual bodily harm. Sexually assaulting a young girl while celebrating his wife’s pregnancy ? What an overpaid, thick, plonker.
