CALEDONIAN COMMENT

Officials in Afghanistan yesterday declared  that Hamid Karzai (pictured above) was the winner of the country’s disputed presidential poll after cancelling a planned runoff election. The announcement came after Karzai’s main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah , dropped out of the race on the grounds that the vote would be neither free nor fair. “The Independent Election Commission (IEC) declares the esteemed Hamid Karzai as the president, because he was the winner of the first round and the only candidate in the second round,” the Commission’s chairman, Azizullah Lodin, told reporters. Oh well that’s all right then – democracy restored – everything back to normal – so can we stop asking our brave troops to die propping up Karzai’s discredited regime and bring them home please ? NOW.

Sharia Law coming to Britain ! The Queen forced to wear a burkha and Buckingham Palace turned into a mosque – that’s the vision of Britain under Sharia law proposed by Muslim firebrand nutcase Anjem Choudary (pictured above). He was speaking ahead of a demonstration planned for central London over the weekend which was subsequently cancelled amid fears that it might have descended into violence. The radical preacher even showed mocked-up photographs of the palace sporting a golden dome (below) and Nelson’s Column as a minaret.

Choudary ranted on : “We hope to eradicate man-made law from Britain and the world. We call upon Prime Minister Gordon Brown to implement Sharia law and we call upon the Queen to give up playing God. There is only one supreme being. When Sharia law is implemented in Britain, maybe in 10 or 15 years’ time, she would be expected like all women in Britain to be covered from head to toe, only revealing her face and hands. If the Queen refused, she would be punished according to Sharia law”. Choudary’s sidekick Abu Rumaysahl added: “Buckingham Palace would become a mosque and play a central role in society.” Her Majesty was unavailable for comment. But here’s mine – why don’t we lock these bloody tossers up and throw away the key ? Or better still, buy them a one-way ticket to an Islamic paradise of their choice, which happily won’t force them to reluctantly take welfare payments from Infidels and can have the expense of policing their puerile, intolerant, racist nonsense.

British Olympic swimming champion Rebecca Adlington (pictured above) has formally complained to the BBC that it let comedian Frankie Boyle off with only ”a slap on the wrist” over jokes that she says caused her deep hurt. The double gold medal winner at last year’s Beijing Olympics has demanded an explanation from the BBC over why it chose not to punish the comic for “outrageous’ slurs that left her ‘humiliated”. And her agent has called for the BBC to ban Boyle over his comments. During an episode of BBC2′s satirical show Mock The Week last year, soon after Miss Adlington’s Olympic triumph, Boyle said she resembled “someone looking at themselves in the back of a spoon”. Now regardless of whether Ms Adlington’s feelings have been hurt, another more compelling reason for punishing Boyle is that if pathetic, juvenile slurs like that are the best he can do, he’s obviously a crap comedian who should be taken off anyway, regardless about how good the out-of-touch, equally juvenile and arrogant luvvies at the BBC think he is.

An oil rig off the coast of Australia, which ruptured 2 months ago spilling millions of litres of oil into the Timor Sea, burst into flames over the weekend, causing more alarm for environmental campaigners. The damaged West Atlas rig (pictured above), situated 125 miles off the coast of West Australia, caught fire on Sunday during the latest attempt to plug the leak which covered an area of at least 5,800 square miles of ocean. The Australian Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson said the rig’s Thai-based operators PTTEP Australasia would make another attempt to stop the spill by filling the well with heavy mud. So a potential environmental disaster. And how long I wonder before petrol prices rise at UK garages, because some bright spark economist will tell us that world oil prices will have to rise because of the fire ? Round about this Thursday, I would guess.
