major

Former UK Prime Minister Sir John Major (pictured above) is reportedly considering a return to frontline politics if the Conservative opposition party wins the next general election. The former PM indicated yesterday that he would consider accepting a government job if Conservative leader David Cameron takes power next year. He said he had been taking a “sabbatical” from politics and would not now rule out taking up a seat in the House of Lords as a working Conservative peer. Mr Cameron, who worked as a political adviser to the last Conservative government, is known to be an admirer of Sir John. Are the new generation of politicians really so talentless that they require to recall failed has-beens, especially a has-been who had it off with Edwina Currie ? Seems so. Do us a favour, Sir John – stay on sabbatical – failing that, stay on Edwina.

In the UK murderers who kill with a knife (above) will serve a minimum of 25 years in jail under plans announced by ineffectual Justice Secretary Jack Straw yesterday. Mr Straw unveiled proposals for longer jail terms for knife murderers after a review involving senior judges and the Sentencing Guidelines Council. The minimum term for adults convicted of murdering with a knife or other implement will rise from 15 to 25 years, MP’s were told. When a knife murderer has served the minimum term, the Parole Board will decide whether the offender should be released from prison. At least the measure addresses the ludicrous differential that exists currently between gun murder and knife murder. Murder is murder.

By the same token, it’s high time the authorities also addressed the issue of killing by getting into a car and hitting someone. In many cases these incidents are nothing short of murder either, yet the motorist usually gets away with a minimal sentence. Similarly, it’s high time we stopped using the nonsensical politically correct differentiation between “murder” and “racist murder”, where if white kills non-white the sentence is greater than the other way round. Whether committed by whites or non-whites, using gun, knife or car, murder is murder.

 pope

Former Hitler Youth and Nazi anti-aircraft gunner Pope Benedict XVI (pictured above) is breaking new ground this Christmas - an album of him singing is to be released at the end of this month. The 8 track CD is produced by record label Geffen, which also manages rock legends Guns N’ Roses, The Stone Roses, The Cure and Nirvana, as well as rapper Snoop Dogg. Entitled “Music From The Vatican Alma Mater”, the album, which will cost £9.99, features a blend of chants and songs featuring the voice of the Prussian Pontiff for the first time. On the CD he sings in Latin, Italian, Portuguese, French and German and is accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. It was however rumoured to be too sensitive to include choirboys on the recording, so that particular musical feature will be lost to posterity.

 Flooding

More than 900,000 homes and businesses in England and Wales could be at the highest risk of flooding (above) by 2035 without increasing investment in defences, the Environment Agency warned yesterday. The agency said the number of properties at the highest risk of “inundation” (that’s flooding to you and me) could rise by 60% from current figures of 560,000, as it outlined a new 5-year strategy, including plans to protect an extra 200,000 homes and businesses from flood waters. The Environment Agency is also planning to improve 9,000 miles of waterways, reduce serious pollution incidents by 5% a year and preventing inappropriate development in areas at risk of flooding under its plans for 2010 to 2015. All this must be music to the ears of the insurance industry – just think, 900,000 homes they can withdraw cover from after taking rip-off premiums for years.

 RemembranceDay

November 11th is Remembrance Day, a date made more poignant as UK and Allied servicemen continue to make the supreme sacrifice in places like Afghanistan. Whatever the views expressed on the various conflicts around the world - and this blog is itself outspoken on these matters - that in no way should detract from deeply respectful recognition of our brave service personnel past and present.
